Gyms are a great way to exercise all parts of the body and build strength, balance, flexibility and fitness - but can it do harm in some conditions? In the vast majority of cases the answer is no; IF your exercise program is designed by a qualified professional.
Chronic back pain, neck pain, arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, respiratory and cardiac conditions can all be helped with an appropriate exercise program. Exercise also helps control many other common medical complications such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol (as exercise lowers blood-lipid profile), diabetes (by improving circulation, and improving blood sugar control with increased muscle metabolism). Exercise also reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.
What evidence is there for exercise?
In a study at the University of Queensland it was found that people who do vigorous exercise for an hour or more each day have 30% less arthritis and 70% less dementia, and enjoy independence for as much as 13 years longer. A recent study found regular exercise reduces risk of Alzheimer's disease by 40%, even in those over 75 who had not frequently exercised before.
Exercise following major orthopaedic surgery such as joint replacements and reconstructions is vital in returning to full function but requires an understanding on procedures and precautionary measures.

Cooma - Anytime Fitness
At Snowy Mountains Physiotherapy in Cooma, our Exercise Physiology/Gym programs are based in Anytime Fitness in Commissioner Street, Cooma. Individual sessions are charged as per standard physiotherapy consultations. Rebates from private health funds apply. An entry and joining fee for the gym is also applicable allowing you to have 24 hour access, 7 days/week.
What to wear/bring
- Wear comfortable clothing, most prefer loose fitting shorts & T-shirt.
- Wear comfortable running/walking shoes.
